Roland Bainton is a respected Luther scholar. He wrote the seminal Here I Stand, the benchmark of all Luther books. When a filmmaker sought to film Luther sites, Bainton was tabbed to be tour guide. This book is a companion to Martin Luther's Christmas Book. Mr. Bainton has selected prime excerpts from Luther's sermons on the Passion and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Hence, the title might have been more appropriately Martin Luther's Holy Week Book. But as Easter is the highlight of that week, and of our faith, the title is appropriate. There are five chapters. The chapters are "The Journey to Jerusalem and Holy Week," "The Lord's Supper," "Arrest and Trial," "The Crucifixion," and "The Resurrection." Sermon excerpts contain the Bible passages from which they were preached, except for the chapter on "The Lord's Supper." Here, it seems, the year in which the sermon preached/lecture given is printed. Mr. Bainton doesn't explain this change in layout. For the most part Bainton left Luther as he was, a man threatened by the Edict of Worms who preached to Germans. Bainton advises us to follow Luther's lead in preaching the timeless Gospel truths to the people of our time in their time.
