This book is subtitled "The Not-For-Dummies Guide to the History, Technology, and Use of the Internet." And to be sure this volume is not light reading. But it is not all that challenging, either. The author explains all those acronyms like IP address and DNS and HTTP and others. He gives the reader a bit of the history of the development of the Internet, how exactly it works, and gives examples of file movement between two computers.

The book also has an exhaustive index. Since this book is about the Internet I looked up "Gore" and "Gates." There was one mention of Bill Gates and two for Al Gore (one being a piece of legislation named after the former VP). But Al Gore is not credited in this book for inventing the Internet.

I especially enjoyed the historical aspects of computer and Internet development. It shows the progressive development of mankind seeking to store, manipulate, and share data. Of course when the Internet was first begun no one thought of Amazon.com or xxxadult.com. But here we are, only mouse clicks away from information, goods, and services. And if you’re curious about how your PC can make this all happen, this book will make that clear. If you wonder how your e-mail gets to another computer, this book answers that question. If you wonder why the e-mail can't let you send large files, or attachments, but you can transfer those files via an FTP server, again download that information from this book.
