The story follows some mice who go out to play. They should be looking out for snakes, but they get tired and take a nap.

A snake comes and finds dinner-mice, who are "little, warm, and tasty, fast asleep." And the snake counts his mice as he gathers them in a jar.

One mouse wakes up and discovers the trouble. He points out another mouse the snake overlooked. The snake is greedy and goes after that mouse (or IS it a mouse?). Meanwhile, the ten mice (count them) rocked the jar over and get away. No supper for snake tonight!

Children age 6 months to 3 years should enjoy the counting exercise and the hope that the mice can get away.
