Industry giant Marvel Comics is tooling its vast wealth of adventure stories for young children in a series called Marvel Adventures. Unlike traditional comic books whose stories span across several issues, each Marvel Adventures comic book digest is a stand-alone story, designed for children with the reading level of 9-12 years old. The Marvel Adventures Spider-Man series is based on early issues written by the great Stan Lee himself, updated from their 1960s versions for today's children.
Marvel Adventures Spider-Man Volume 3: Doom with a View starts out with (you guessed it) Dr. Doom cooking up something evil and Spidey getting to save a lot of people, including the Fantastic Four, without any of them knowing what he did! He then tangles with Mysterio, the (Mad) Thinker, and his golden automaton, Intello. Then in the final story Spidey tangles with Peter Parker! Well--a villain called Nightmare, but Peter Parker and Spidey definitely tangle after a fashion. As with the previous volumes, this third offering in the Spidey series is full of banter--Spidey will fling out good jokes, corny jokes, or webbing with equal frequency, making each story action-packed and entertaining.
Marvel labels the comic books 'for all ages', and since the 8 year-old in our house has been devouring everything in the series we can find for him, I would say younger children who have appropriate reading skills can get in on the action, too! Parents interested in sparking a passion for reading in young minds would do well to look into the many stories made for this series.
